As our roads get busier, disruptions become more frequent, and the world starts to rely on public transport more due to the cost-of-living crisis. It is important now, more than ever, to have safe and efficient transport routes for large transport vehicles. Recent industrial action on the railways has seen an increased reliance on bus services that brings its own challenges when needing to quickly run new routes safely.

At Foresolutions, we are dedicated to developing innovative technology that tackles the pressing issue of road safety and service efficiency. Accidents involving buses and other large vehicles have become a growing concern, prompting the need for proactive measures. Our Forerouting software is meticulously designed to proactively identify potential hazards, empower drivers with accurate route information, and prevent accidents before they occur.

Working With Go Ahead London

We have previously provided vehicle tracking solutions to Go Ahead London (GAL), allowing them to accurately monitor its buses’ locations via our Foretrack Connect platform. Happy with our service, GAL set us a new challenge to overcome!

The Challenge

GAL operates rail replacement bus services, and the number of services it offers has risen exponentially during the recent industrial action by the rail unions. Many of these routes are unfamiliar to GAL’s drivers, meaning that some kind of SatNav system needed to be employed.

Most third party SatNav software does not incorporate route planning for high vehicles, so many drivers would find that the standard route selected by navigation software would direct them along routes containing low bridges, meaning the bus would need to stop and try to turn around – not easy in a double decker bus in the middle of a busy London street.

GAL was also concerned about the possibility of bridge strikes – a recent incident led to 10 passengers being injured Ten injured after double-decker bus crashes into low bridge and entire roof ripped off - Mirror Online.

The Solution

Utilising our expertise in Microsoft Azure Maps, Foresolutions developed Forerouting, an application that offers intelligent journey routing based on the dimensions of the vehicle. After logging on using secure authentication, the driver enters the type of vehicle they are driving (single decker, double decker) into the application running on an Android device in the cab. Forerouting then plots the most appropriate route for that particular vehicle, avoiding routes containing low bridges.

Back at HQ, GAL can monitor the location of its buses via the Forerouting tracking page, giving the additional benefit of knowing where its fleet is. Additionally, ad-hoc hazards, such as road closures or accidents, can be reported and logged in the portal.

How Does Forerouting Work?

Our Forerouting software combines cutting-edge algorithms, real-time data, and geolocation technology to provide drivers with the safest and most efficient routes. By analysing critical factors such as bridge heights, road conditions, traffic congestion, and more, our software offers drivers detailed guidance, ensuring they avoid potential hazards along their journey.

Real-time Updates: Our software constantly monitors road closures, and other variables, providing drivers with real-time updates to adapt their routes accordingly.

Customisation: We understand that every fleet is unique. Therefore, our Forerouting software allows drivers and fleet managers to customise its settings to align with their specific requirements, ensuring compatibility with different vehicles and road conditions.

Driver Assistance: Foresolutions' software offers intuitive navigation, visual and auditory alerts, and clear instructions to guide drivers safely through their routes, minimising the risk of accidents.

Data Analysis: Our software collects and analyses extensive data, enabling fleet managers to identify patterns, trends, and areas of improvement within their operations.
